"Pressure washing" gets used as a catch-all term, but it actually describes two distinct processes that use different equipment settings, different chemicals, and are suited to completely different surfaces. Using the wrong one is one of the most common (and expensive) DIY mistakes we see.
Pressure Washing: High Force, Hard Surfaces
Pressure washing uses concentrated high-pressure water — typically 3,000–4,000 PSI for professional equipment — to mechanically blast dirt, grime, and stains off durable surfaces. It's the right call for:
- Concrete driveways and sidewalks

- Some masonry and stone surfaces
- Certain fencing materials (with caution)

Instead of blasting growth off the surface, the solution breaks it down chemically, and a gentle rinse carries it away. This is the correct method for:
- Roof shingles
- Vinyl, wood, and fiber-cement siding
- Stucco
- Painted surfaces

Why Using the Wrong Method Causes Damage
High-pressure water on shingles can strip protective granules and shorten roof lifespan. On siding, it can force water behind panels and into wall cavities, leading to hidden moisture problems. On wood decking, it can gouge and splinter the surface. Meanwhile, using soft washing's low pressure on a heavily stained concrete driveway simply won't remove ground-in stains — it's the wrong tool in the other direction, just a less damaging mistake.
